But the history of supply chains and the way the industry was run in the city has come under renewed scrutiny since the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ (ABS) latest census figures were released.
The ABS’ latest data shows there are now about 3,600 buildings in the CBD, with about 5,000 people living in them.
But it’s not all about supply chains.
The Census shows there is a lot of work done by local authorities and companies to get a good deal for their workers.
There are also more and more jobs available for those with good skills, which could mean a lot more supply chains for workers in those buildings.
Architecture is one area of this that needs some work, and a lot less supply chains in that area.ABS’s figures show that the number of people employed in the building trades has fallen from 1,566,000 in 2007 to 925,000 last year.
And there’s not much that’s changing.
The biggest drop in the number working in the industry is seen in the Construction and Materials and Construction trades, with the number down from 3,631,000 to 2,534,000.
However, there are many more jobs that could be filled if more people came forward with their skills and experience.
“It’s just a matter of time before the skills of the workforce is higher than the skills that people can access to do these jobs,” said Michael Jones, from the NSW Building and Construction Association.
Mr Jones says he is concerned the government needs to get more people into the building industry, and more people are now doing the construction work.
“You know, it’s all about the people that are able to go and do these skills that are required for this type of construction work, so you know, the industry has really been in crisis,” he said.
“There’s not many opportunities for people to actually work on the construction sites that they want to do.
So we have to get them into the industry.”
The latest ABS figures show the average building worker earns about $23,400 a year, but there are more skilled trades that pay a little more.
In fact, there is some evidence that some of those trades may be better off, because some of the jobs are less dangerous.
There’s a lot that goes into getting the job done.
Archivist Sarah Jones says there’s an underlying cultural difference that prevents people from getting into those trades.
“People, especially young people, tend to be really afraid of the work, you know,” she said.”[When they come in] they see this kind of work, which they are supposed to be proud of, and they’re not really excited about the work.
It’s a very vulnerable time in society.
It’s very, very, extremely stressful.”
